Cub Scouts Visit Win-TV

Cub Scouts Visit Win-TV
On Saturday March 7th the Win-TV studio was filled with excitement as Cub Scout pack 256 learned about the television production process. Access Manager Rachel Draghe explained how the process works and what each piece of equipment is used for. The scouts explored the studio camera and the control room, where they took turns being directors and camera operators. They learned about the parts of the camera, the video switcher and audio equipment. The pack hopes to return to Win-TV soon to create their own public service announcement for broadcast.

In The Works: Farmington River Program

In The Works: Farmington River Program
Win-TV volunteers have recently embarked on another project, which is a program about the lower Farmington River. The goal of the project is to produce an environmentally informative program about the water quality of the Farmington River. Win-TV has been in contact with the Department of Environmental Protection and the Farmington River Watershed Association to gather information on the portion of the river that runs from Rainbow Reservoir in Poquonock to the end of the river that empties out into the Connecticut River. Although a fourteen mile span of upper river from Colebrook to Canton was added to the national Wild and Scenic Rivers system in 1994, much of the water quality in portions of the lower river are still being researched.
This upcoming program is designed to raise awareness about the river and highlight some of the FRWA's plans at preservation. The program is tentatively scheduled to be complete by the end of April after interviews, water testing footage, and other scenic footage of the river is gathered. The program will hopefully provide Windsor residents with valuable information about the water quality of the river and what they can do to help preserve this local natural resource.

In The Works: Roger Wolcott Kindergarten Readiness DVD

In The Works: Roger Wolcott Kindergarten Readiness DVD
This month Win-TV has been busy working with Laurie Rumroll and Betsie Lepak of Roger Wolcott Early Childhood Center on a kindergarten readiness DVD to help parents prepare their children for kindergarten. The DVD combines narration with still images from the school as well as video clips to inform parents about Roger Wolcott and to give them ways to prepare their children for lifelong learning.
"We received a grant from WEF to create this DVD and we are so grateful to Sarah and Rachel for turning our idea into a reality. The DVD will be very beneficial to parents of kindergarten aged kids," Rumroll explains.
The program is currently in the works and will be finished by the end of March. Parents of prospective kindergarteners can expect to see the DVD in their Roger Wolcott information packet at the parent informational session this Spring.

Send Windsor to the Troops

Send Windsor to the Troops
The Win-TV community service project called Send Hometown Windsor to the Troops continues with monthly packages going to our Windsor and Windsor-related service men and women. Each month we send food like small cans of fruit with flip tops, pudding cups, granola bars, snacks like chips, cheese and crackers, beefaroni, toiletries and local papers and we also try to send lots of letters and pictures from our students and children.
In March and again in April we will be doing more packing. We will be packing 1000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies donated from various groups around the area. We will pack at the VFW in Windsor on Sunday March 29th form 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In March we packed our usual local boxes and our group also received basketballs and lots of chips, dip, cards and letters for a special March Madness surprise.
By partnering with Frank of the Glastonbury VFW we have a much greater inventory and pay postage only on our now larger boxes.
Frank has been sending packages for over 5 years and knows the ins and outs of delivery. Frank has expressed a need for packers and sites and Win-TV plans to help meet that need for the next couple of months in order to reach an even greater number of men and women in the service.
A very Special Thanks goes to St. Joseph Church and Joan Alutto for all the foods and goodies they provide for our troops each month, Scott's Sports for supplying 15 basketballs to send out in March, Lori Hartman and other Town Hall employees for chips, dip and donations of additional basketballs, and Kathleen Stoll of Ellsworth School for collecting chips, dip, and snacks for the March Madness boxes.
Anyone interested in helping with this project is encouraged to contact Win-TV.
