August 2009
Greetings from the Access CoordinatorAs summer draws to a close, many of us try to stop and enjoy this final sweet lull before the days shorten and the school year hustle and bustle begins again. As people's calenders begin to fill up with things other than vacations, BBQs and family outings, I encourage residents to contact Win-TV about any school or community related events that they would like to see aired. Sharing special events with the community creates a stronger bond among its citizens, opening the doors to unity, communication and understanding. So, enjoy these last golden days of the season and thank you for tuning in.

A Famous Face at Wilson Branch Library | | | On Saturday, August 15th Wilson Branch Library hosted a special guest and fortunately Win-TV had the camera rolling. Karyn Parsons, known for her roll as Hilary Banks on the long-running television series "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," now has a production company that focuses on creating educational animated videos for kids. Parson's company Sweet Blackberry makes interesting, informational videos that teach children about influential African Americans from the past. During her visit, Ms. Parson read a story for the children then spoke to the audience about her current projects as well as her influences and inspirations. She announced the winners of the library's summer reading contest and was a big hit with both the children and adults. In an interview with Sarah Furie, Ms. Parsons explained, "My goal with the videos was to create an entertaining educational supplement and they are currently being used in some school curriculums. Educators have been our biggest cheerleaders so far." To view the interview with Karyn Parsons as well as the entire Wilson Branch Library program check the Win-TV program guide.

In the Works: Senior Stories from Kimberly HallComing this fall is a new program dedicated to capturing the stories of some Kimberly Hall residents. These documentaries will serve to preserve life stories and recount the good old days, while exploring the rich historical, cultural and personal value of the memories of society's elder citizens. Thanks to Kimberly Hall, Win-TV will document life experiences of several of their residents. The first program pays homage to a woman who had an extraordinary life that defied conventions of the time. As told to Win-TV by her Daughter Teresa, Kimberly Hall resident Maria Fazio traveled the world as a nurse during WWII before coming back to Connecticut to raise a family. Teresa's pride in her mother's life is apparent in her narrative as she commemorates her interesting life in the first installment of "Senior Stories." Check the program guide for air times.

Troops Packing UpdateWin-TV continues to send monthly care packages to troops overseas. This month we received a wonderful letter from chaplains in Afghanistan. If a person is coming home and a package is shipped to that person we ask that it be forwarded to the chaplain. this happened last month. The letter from several chaplains tells us how much they appreciate getting the packages and just how much such treasures enhance the morale of the troops. The letter tells us that the goodies and letters were put in the common area where 100 or more congregate. Presently, there are only 2 soldiers from Windsor on our list and we hope this is accurate but such a small number seems doubtful. If you know of any men or women serving in war zones PLEASE call us at WIN TV and with the name and address so that we can remember all our Windsor and Windsor related service men and women.
